Supreme Court of India – Vacancy of One Judge
As of 1 December 2025, the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court is 34 judges; with 33 currently sitting, there is one vacancy. The absence of delay: in May 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended a set of three new judges, which were accepted, restoring full strength for a time. Given these dynamics, it is expected that the next elevation will again come from the bench — i.e., a serving High Court judge — consistent with recent practice. While no name is officially announced yet, the pattern suggests a bench-origin elevation rather than from the Bar.
