India’s decisive Trade Negotiations on Critical Minerals is being negotiated by Vimal Anand (JS) in the Department of Commerce
India is taking decisive steps to strengthen its trade relations and secure access to essential resources through upcoming negotiations with Peru and Chile. These talks mark a pivotal moment in India’s ongoing efforts to expand its economic presence in Latin America—a region rich in critical minerals vital for technology manufacturing and clean energy transitions.
The India–Peru trade negotiations, scheduled for January 2026 in New Delhi, are progressing steadily, with both sides focusing on critical minerals cooperation, market access, and investment opportunities. These minerals, such as lithium, copper, and cobalt, play a key role in India’s ambitions for renewable energy, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing.
Parallelly, India and Chile have recently concluded their third round of discussions for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This proposed agreement aims to deepen trade, boost investment, and improve bilateral cooperation in sectors like mining, energy, and industrial development.
By strengthening ties with resource-rich Latin American nations, India is strategically working to diversify its trade partnerships and reduce reliance on traditional suppliers. This initiative also reinforces India’s focus on sustainable and resilient supply chains for minerals that underpin future economic growth and green technology transitions.
The Indian delegation for both negotiations is being led by Vimal Anand, Joint Secretary in the Department of Commerce, who also serves as the Chief Negotiator for these trade agreements. His leadership reflects India’s growing emphasis on building stronger global alliances, particularly in emerging markets that align with the country’s long-term economic and environmental goals.
Together, these talks signal India’s determination to shape a forward-looking trade strategy that not only secures vital resources but also positions the nation as a key player in the global shift toward sustainable development and clean energy innovation.
