The Prime Minister’s Office has taken cognisance of the slowing growth trajectory in India’s agriculture sector, which has declined from 4.6 percent in 2024–25 to an estimated 3.1 percent in 2025–26. In response, the upcoming Union Budget is expected to outline targeted policy interventions aimed at revitalizing the sector through cooperative farming models and enhanced value addition.

Government sources indicate that the budget may focus on strengthening farmer collectives, improving post-harvest infrastructure, and expanding agro-processing capabilities to boost rural incomes and employment. Integrating small and marginal farmers through cooperatives is being viewed as a key strategy to achieve economies of scale, modernize supply chains, and enhance market competitiveness. These measures are expected to align with the broader rural development and inclusive growth agenda.

In a significant move set to reshape the future of agricultural innovation, ANNAM.AI at IIT Ropar and the University of Western Sydney (UWS) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) along with a detailed work plan to establish a Joint Center of Excellence in Noida. The agreement was formalised in the presence of Australian Education Minister Jason Clare and Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, marking a major milestone in India–Australia scientific and academic collaboration. The proposed center will focus on AI-driven agriculture, farm automation, climate-resilient farming practices, and next-generation agri-supply chains, leveraging the complementary strengths of both globally respected institutions.

This collaboration brings together IIT Ropar’s deep expertise in agri-technology through its ANNAM.AI initiative and the internationally recognised research ecosystem of UWS. ANNAM.AI has emerged as a national leader in AI-enabled soil intelligence, precision agriculture, and farmer-centric digital platforms, while UWS is globally renowned for its Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, a leading center for research on plant-soil-climate interactions. Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Rajeev Ahuja described the partnership as more than a formal agreement, stating that it represents a commitment to building one of the world’s most advanced agricultural intelligence ecosystems that will empower Indian farmers with tools that are accurate, affordable, and accessible.

Australian Education Minister Jason Clare highlighted the shared vision of both nations for sustainable agriculture, noting that the joint center would accelerate innovation, deepen academic ties, and generate real-world impact for millions of farmers. Echoing this sentiment, the President of the University of Western Sydney remarked that the partnership would combine UWS’s global research strengths with India’s scale and diversity, creating a model for international collaboration aimed at securing the future of food systems worldwide.

The Joint Center of Excellence will function as a hub for cutting-edge agricultural research, industry collaboration, and farmer-focused technology deployment. Its core focus areas will include AI-powered soil and crop diagnostics, automation and robotics for farm operations, climate-adaptive farming models, digital twins for agriculture, sustainable water and nutrient management, and advanced agri-supply chain analytics. In addition, the center will support joint PhD programs, faculty exchanges, and industry-backed innovation challenges, fostering a strong talent pipeline. By combining IIT Ropar’s leadership in engineering and artificial intelligence with UWS’s strengths in environmental and agricultural sciences, the initiative aims to enable data-driven decision-making for farmers, scale precision agriculture, strengthen food security through predictive analytics, and catalyse new agri-tech startups and rural innovation clusters.

Located in Noida, the center will benefit from close proximity to industry partners, government agencies, and innovation ecosystems, ensuring rapid translation of research into field-ready solutions. The MoU, signed on December 09, reflects a shared commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change, soil degradation, and food security. Emphasising the transformative potential of the collaboration, Prof. Pushpendra P. Singh, Project Director of ANNAM.AI at IIT Ropar, noted that modern agriculture demands precision, prediction, and personalization, adding that when advanced science meets the soil, farmers benefit and nations prosper.

Former Prasar Bharati head Jawhar Sircar described the move as “grossly illegal” and a clear sign of pro-ruling-party bias. While the broadcaster claims the change is mere aesthetic rebranding, many media analysts and viewers note a shift toward increased coverage of ruling party narratives and less space for diverse political viewpoints—fueling questions around neutrality.

The new tug will have a 60-ton bollard pull capacity, deliver silent operations, zero carbon emissions, and high energy efficiency, underlining the shift toward sustainable maritime operations.

The Indian government’s carefully phrased response to the death sentence handed to Sheikh Hasina—stating its stance as “in the interest of Bangladesh”—signals a nuanced, almost cryptic diplomatic posture. By avoiding explicit endorsement of the interim administration in Dhaka, New Delhi appears to be keeping its options open amid uncertain political realignments. The phrase suggests a broader strategic calculus: safeguarding India’s long-term interests in a volatile neighbourhood without being seen as interfering in Bangladesh’s internal upheaval. At the same time, sources hint that India is quietly cooperating on procedural fronts regarding Hasina’s potential extradition, balancing pressure from the interim regime with backchannel reassurances to Awami League loyalists. This calibrated ambiguity underlines India’s pragmatic recognition that Bangladesh’s political stability—whoever governs it—remains vital to its security, trade, and regional connectivity.

Under RAMP Programme, in a quiet but consequential push to green India’s smallest state among the nation’s broader decarbonisation drive, the Centre of Research for Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization (CREED) at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has brought specialized energy and water audits to micro, small, and medium enterprises in Goa under the Government of India’s acclaimed Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) program, partnering with the state’s Directorate of Industries, Trade and Commerce to arm local industrial units with essential tools, insights, and technical guidance for trimming costs, rooting out inadequacies, and embracing cleaner technologies.

Backed by hard research and a strong record of industrial engagement across numerous states, the Centre of Research for Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization’s auditing arm, KISEM, has been working closely with micro, small, and medium enterprises in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana on decarbonisation efforts, now spreading that expertise to Goa by forming a dedicated team to map energy and water consumption patterns in local industries, detectiting often-unnoticed operational wastage, with each audit delivering an investment-grade project report that details corrective measures, technology upgrades, and process optimizations to drive sustainable advancements under the RAMP initiative.

For Goa’s MSMEs, the programme has come at a favourable moment. The RAMP scheme offers a 50 per cent government subsidy on the cost of energy audits, substantially lowering the barrier for small industries to access top-tier technical expertise. Combined with additional incentives under the umbrella scheme, the collaboration has opened the door for businesses in the state to modernize operations while keeping costs controllable. Officials involved in the initiative noted that the audits are helping MSMEs address long-standing challenges — from excessive fuel and electricity usage to incompetent water handling and old-fashioned machinery.

Many units, they said, would be able to identify high-impact, low-investment improvements within days of CREED’s assessments. CREED’s work in Goa builds on its expanding national footprint in energy-efficiency services. In Punjab, where the Centre has been deeply active, CREED-led initiatives have already proposed more than 49,000 tonnes of CO₂ reductions yearly, underscoring the Centre’s capability to deliver real-world climate gains using systematic audits and industry-focused research. Commenting on the initiative, IIT Ropar Director Prof. Rajeev Ahuja said that CREED’s engagement in Goa reflects the institute’s commitment to bringing academic excellence to the industry’s doorstep. “Our work with MSMEs under the RAMP program will show how targeted interventions can reshape industrial performance. By combining advanced research with on-ground support, we will help enterprises become cost-efficient, resource-conscious, and future-ready.”

CREED Coordinator Dr. Manigandan S added that the Centre’s audit methodology is designed to be both practical and transformative. “We focus on solutions that industries can implement immediately, while also preparing them for long-term sustainability. The response from Goa’s MSMEs has been extremely encouraging.” As the programme continues, IIT Ropar’s CREED is expected to expand its engagement with Goan industries, firming the state’s shift toward cleaner, more efficient manufacturing practices.

The Govt has informed the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025, marking the full operationalisation of the DPDP Act, 2023. Together, the Act and Rules create a humble, citizen-focused and innovation-friendly framework for the responsible use of digital personal data. Enacted by Parliament on 11 August 2023, the DPDP Act establishes a comprehensive framework for protecting digital personal data, setting out the obligations of entities handling such data (Data Fiduciaries) and the rights and duties of individuals (Data Principals). The Act is guided by seven core principles including consent and transparency, purpose limitation, data minimisation, accuracy, storage limitation, security safeguards, and accountability. The Data Protection Board will function as a fully digital institution, enabling citizens to file and track complaints online through a dedicated platform and mobile app, promoting transparency, efficiency, and ease of living. Appeals against its decisions will lie with the Appellate Tribunal TDSAT.
